SUNDAY WORSHIP  10:15 AM

Baby Books, Locks of Hair and Yardsticks

June 28, 2016

Sometimes I thought it was because I was adopted, and I’d heard my parents had waited nine long years to get a baby of their own. Other times I thought it was because my mom came from a long line of packrats. Whatever the reason, I am the proud owner of a baby book that chronicles my every move from ten days to two-and-a-half years of age. It holds creepy cellophane-encased locks of hair samples, a flat old rose that was on the altar at Sun Valley United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, on the day I was christened, and a lot of detailed documentation of my progress.

We parents can go cuckoo over our kids, poring over name books and wait-listing to get them in the best swim instruction, sports teams or schools. On my short list as a parent were concerns about making sure my kids read literature and listened to music from other cultures, that they

Think for a moment about your Heavenly Father: What do you think He’s planning and dreaming for you?

knew how to speak up for themselves and make their own appointments on the phone, that they had opportunities to make their own money by doing tasks around the house and that they knew how to be a good friend. In order to seek balance, we mostly limited each of our four kids to one organized activity and one church activity during the school year, and drew a line in the sand when it came to travel teams that would require us to miss worship with our church family.

Think for a moment now about your Heavenly Father: What do you think He’s planning and dreaming for you?

That thought causes my heart to stir. It is real. He wants us to grow, to stretch and to be about His business.

As Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

For the last few weeks, we have been studying the newest believers and hearing the call, “Can I Get a Witness?” You might be taking your first steps in letting the truth of songs full of Scripture sink into your soul and being. Maybe being part of a Grace Group that meets faithfully to encourage each other and pray is a new experience for you. At some point soon, you are going to hear the call to come out of the crib and strut your stuff.

Ephesians has a word about that, too; in chapter 4, verses 14-15 tell us, “We are not meant to remain as children but to grow up in every way into Christ.”

Remember that first time you took the car keys by yourself and ran an errand for a family member? It was exhilarating! You worried that you might get lost or have a wreck, but hopefully you returned home safely with a gallon of milk and gave your mom most of the change. You probably stood just a hair taller, and the next time wasn’t as scary.

If you picture God on His throne, gazing proudly at the yardstick on the pearlescent wall beside Him, what marks does He see in your growth? Maybe there’s a mark for the day you chose to believe and felt that warming wash all over your body. There’s probably a mark for the first time you prayed your own earnest prayer. Maybe you listened to Him when He called you out of your comfort zone to visit the old folks in a nursing home, or to go with your church on a mission trip when you had no idea where you would get the money. For me, there’s a recent hash mark by the day when my heart became just a bit more softened towards the way I think about the value and freedom of every human God has created.

How do you know what God is calling you to do? What good works and heart-stretching wisdom are available for you? I’d love to visit with you about these questions. Make a coffee date or lunch appointment with someone you trust, and have that discussion! Let’s spur on one another to become mature believers, becoming His witnesses in Fayetteville, the United States and wherever He may call us.

Let's take up the challenge in Acts 1:8  — “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Teresa Cornett's favorite question from others is "what do you think about......?!" so she loves to write when she gets a chance to mouth off.
