Known: Living History | Learning Guide

August 27th, 2023

Text: Ephesians 2: 11-22 (NET)

Introduction:

We recently did some rearranging in our house and I was going through things in my office. I have this big shelf unit that in addition to books, holds other stuff, rocks from hikes, old electronics, some 8 track and cassette tapes, well used and retired bike parts - you get the drift. Besides the fact that I think this stuff is cool, each things holds memories for me - reminds me of an experience of relationship or era in my life. These things help tell a story, a story that I continue to live. Yes, they are things from the past, but they help explain the very currency life I am now living. The ‘history” I am now living.

As part of our Known series, this week we’ll take a look at some of Grace Churches “living history”.

Grace and peace y’all,

John Ray and the Grace teaching team

Big Idea:

“The past is never dead. It's not even past.” - William Faulkner

Take Away:

Understanding the things, events, people and ideas that have formed us help us live more faithfully in the present.

How does this fit with Belong, Become, Believe?

Knowing why we practice being church the way we do helps us in our effort to place belonging at the center of our ethos. This helps form, helps us become more and more like the One we follow. All this informs and is informed by what we confess to believe.

What's Next?

We take a look at the values that guide us at Grace Church.

Resources:

Our theology and practices have become more inclusive over time, but the consistent themes of shared leadership, Christ-centered worship, and community-focused have been constant. The great impact of individual members and single events is also seen throughout.

Story Prompts:

  • What is the story of your relationship with Grace church?

  • Include brief stories of the history, people (leaders and members), mission, vision, values, and culture which will all be built upon more.
