Wilderness 101
Text
Matthew 4:1-13 (NET)
Introduction:
A student of mine recently wrote in a reflection “"I find myself wishing he would flip the switch and turn me into a completely mature and wise man…” don’t we all. It seems so frustrating at times to have to learn things by practice, by repetition, by experience. It seems so inefficient to have to come to some of our most important insights long after we feel we could have used them. But then we come to Jesus and see that, in a very real way, He had to experience certain things to fully understand or inhabit them. Now before you go calling me a heretic by saying there were things Jesus didn’t know, dig into the story of the temptations in the wilderness with me this week.
Grace and peace y’all,
John Ray and the teaching team.
Big Idea:
Jesus comes to more fully understand who He is through the wilderness temptations.
Take Away:
Understanding and wisdom is something formed by experience, often by the temptations we face and overcome.
How does this fit with Belong, Become, Believe?
In offering hospitality to each other, we come to understand each other. Knowing starts with welcome and being welcomed. This practice helps form who we are becoming and how we understand what it is we believe.
What's Next?
We all get a view of Jesus first miracle at the wedding in Cana.
