Wrestling with Rest | Learning Guide

October 15th, 2023

Introduction:

Over the past several weeks we took time to follow in the Israelites footsteps and remember who we are as a church. We took time to see how God has formed us, is forming us, and where we’re journeying with God in the next seasons. John took time last week to talk about the importance of these seasons and submitting humbly to the rhythms God has put into motion. Well this week we are going to look closer at one of those rhythms God established at creation. We’re going to talk about that glorious 7th day of creation where God rested and how that forever shaped the people of Israel and our lives today. We’re going to talk about Sabbath and what it means to struggle to rest.

Betty and the Teaching Team

Big Idea:

We need Sabbath rest. We were never and will never need to earn rest. Embracing Sabbath rest allows us to come back to the wholeness that God created us for. It is about taking time to delight and be refreshed by all that God has created.

Take Away:

Loving our Creator God means journeying with and being transformed by a resting God.

Text:

Exodus 31:12-17 (NET)

How does this fit with Belong, Become, Believe?

At Grace we want our primary role to be people who help one another and our community un-hurry our lives to the way of Jesus. We can do this by supporting one another as a community and finding creative ways to give people the space to practice Sabbath. We do this because in practicing Sabbath we become more of who God has created us to be. We believe that Sabbath rest is an essential part of putting our belief in action. Jesus invites each of us to come to him and experience transformative rest. John will walk us through a story that shows God can be moved by our words and is willing to change his mind.
